The Long View is a collection of big-band jazz music composed by a variety of musicians with a connection to MacEwan University. The diverse backgrounds of those involved were a testament to the school's role in the music community while speaking to jazz's ability to bring us together. As a result, there are a multitude of jazz styles within the album, which Dean Allan Gilliland described as "eclectic." My classmates and I each designed a separate album to be reviewed by the Dean and other members involved in the album's creation.
Apart from this singular, subjective word, my colleagues and I were given very little direction from MacEwan's record label, and many of us found it challenging to know what they were looking for. However, I took this as an opportunity to test my limits to see just how far I could take this idea of assortment.
In the end, I was proud of how my concept reflected the eclectic nature of the album, while also showing how the recording of the album served as a safe and collaborative space for many of the musicians during the pandemic. These elements are reflected in the many different typefaces and the energy of the shapes as they interact with their environment.
