I took on this project at Hello Public Design & Branding, intending to create a bold and striking landing page to notify users that a new site was being built. This was the first time that I was required to develop my design, which provided me with a new perspective on the importance of responsive design, which can be adequately resized for different screens. I worked closely with my senior designer and creative director to ensure that my designs met the proper specifications to be developed.
I faced many challenges during this project which required me to rethink my approach to user-centric design work. The alignment of the heading with the body copy on the home page required that the words "under construction" occupy the entirety of the user's screen width. This served as a roadblock of sorts during the development phase, in which I had to further my knowledge of measurement units within browsers to size the heading accurately. Additionally, I was forced to think about the use of the company logo within my design, ensuring that it was used in a way that positively reflected its design. My initial design placed it in the upper left corner of the screen in order to follow UX conventions. However, this placement created uncertainty in the hierarchy, as the logo was very close to the top of the heading, grouping them in a confusing manner. To avoid this, the logo was moved to the right-hand side, which meant that the logo would become extremely small on mobile versions. Once again, a change to the convention was made by isolating the bold monogram and allowing it to bleed off the edge of the screen to create balance with the heading.
This project truly was a team effort from everyone at Hello Public, and I feel that I was able to combine the senior designer's branding expertise with the creative director's development knowledge to further my own designs. Overall, I am very proud of the way that this project reflected the cleanliness of the company brand while creating a definitive style to be used throughout the rest of the site.
